DR. SOUGATA MAHATO
DM (Pediatric Gastroenterology & Hepatology) MD (Pediatrics)
Dr Sougata Mahato is a superspecialist doctor in the field of Paediatric gastroenterology and hepatology in India, mainly practicing in the state of Jharkhand. He is the first and currently the only qualified paediatric gastroenterologist in Jharkhand state.
He entered into medical stream with flying colours with a General Category rank 9th in West Bengal JEE Medical 2006. He completed his MBBS course from Medical College , Kolkata which is the oldest medical college in Asia established in 1835. During MBBS course he received many awards including Gold medal and Honours.
Thereafter he pursued MD Paediatrics course at Lady Hardinge Medical College and Associated Kalawati Saran Children Hospital. KSCH is the largest Govt Paediatric Hospital in Delhi serving the NCR and surrounding states.
He got interested into Paediatric Gastroenterology while undergoing MD training at KSCH which runs dedicated Pediatric Liver Clinic, Celiac Disease Clinic and Gut Clinic weekly. KSCH also houses dedicated paediatric gastroenterology ward for admission of children with various GI illnesses. KSCH also runs the National Center of excellence (NCOE SAM) for facility based management of Severe Acute Malnutrition. This center also mentors all the state COEs(SCOE-SAM) across India under guidance of Dr Praveen Kumar.
Thereafter he underwent PDCC (Post Doctoral Certificate Course) training at SGPGI Lucknow where he received his initial endoscopy training in the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology. This unique training programme is being run by SGPGI since 2001.This programme includes basic endoscopy training along with residency level management of dedicated gastroenterology ward, HDU and ICU. This fullfledged department is the pioneer department in India to start first dedicated training program in Pediatric Gastroenterology initially as PDCC (Since 2001) and later as DM program (Since 2008). The training at SGPGI was under the stalwarts of Pediatric Gastroenterology in India like Dr S.K. Yachha, Dr Ujjal Poddar, Dr Anshu Srivastava and Dr Moinak Sensarma. The dedicated OPDs also included Nutrition Clinic by Dr Laxmikant Bharti.
Subsequently he pursued DM Course in Pediatric Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the prestigious institute of PGIMER Chandigarh. PGIMER also houses Advanced Pediatric Cente, pediatric superspeciality hospital and training center in India. The division of Pediatric Gastroenterology as a separate division within Gastroenterology was started by Dr Saroj Mehta in 1980s first time in country at PGIMER to cater GI related illness in children. The division was carried forward by Dr BR Thapa and Dr Sadhna Lal later on This division separately runs dedicated Pediatric Liver Clinics, Pediatric Gut Clinics and Celiac Disease Clinic. DM program was started here in 2015. Each year there is usually one General category seat and one sponsored/foriegn category seat. He is the 9th person to come out of PGIMER with 'DM Pediatric Gastroenterology' degree till now.
